Vaginal microbiota project
Normal vaginal microbiota plays an important role in health. It has been shown to protect against STDs (for example HIV) and the imbalance of this microbial community is believed to be the cause of bacterial vaginosis. Although important in health, there is not yet a clear understanding about the composition of normal vaginal microbiota.
Since May 2010 we have collaborated with private hospital Fertilitas to determine and define the composition of normal vaginal microbiota of Estonian women using massively parallel 454 Life Sciences pyrosequencing system. The project will last for 2.5 years and incorporate 500 healthy women in reproductive age (15-44 years).
