Vaginal microbiota project extremely popular among Estonian women

Our collaboration with private hospital Fertilitas in determining the composition of normal vaginal microbiota has successfully reached to the second phase. During the first phase vaginal samples from 500 volunteers without health complaints were collected by doctors at the clinic. The work was carried out within 4 months instead of planned 30 months period (2,5 years). The rapid pace of sample collection has surprised all of us. This indicates the importance of the theme among women.
The vaginal sample collection will continue with patients, who will complain about any kind of genital problems related to microbiological activity.
The analysis of the samples collected during the first phase has been started using novel high throughput sequencing system - Roche GS Junior system.
