About BiotaP
Exponentially increasing growth of interest from both the industry and scientific community sides for metagenomic environmental monitoring resulted in founding a BiotaP LLC in 2007 by Estonian biotechnology companies Genomictoolbox LLC and Bioinf LLC.
Microorganisms represent 2/3 of life and contain vast biological diversity that is the product of an estimated 3.8 billion years of evolution. In many environments, as many as 99% of the microorganisms cannot be cultured by standard techniques, and the uncultured fraction includes diverse organisms that are only distantly related to the cultured ones. Therefore, culture-independent methods, like metagenomics, are essential to understand the genetic diversity, population structure, and ecological roles of the majority of microorganisms. Metagenomics has potential to answer fundamental questions in microbial ecology.
BiotaP has developed a following workflow for the analysis of microbioms from different environments:
BiotaP focuses on development and production of metagenomic information based high throughput test systems to analyze various microbioms (microorganism communities) targeting evaluation of different environments including soil, water and air, food and animal feed, and assessment of different clinical specimens like samples from lungs, intestine, genital tracts, etc.
This new approach provides a low human resource demanding technique for monitoring of any microorganism community.
- assembly of tests for qualitative and quantitative analysis of microbioms based on the obtained metagenomic data,
- genetic analysis of microbioms using isolated DNA to determine taxonomic composition and abundance of individual taxons,
- preparation of DNA suitable for different analytical procedures (HTP sequencing, qPCR, etc.) from complex samples.
